Six Mistakes To Avoid When It Comes To Your Massage Therapy Session

Blog

You need to do your part as a patient to get as much as possible out of your massage therapy session. Unfortunately, patients sometimes make mistakes that detract from the effectiveness of the therapy.

The following are six mistakes it's important to avoid when it comes to your massage therapy session:

Eating immediately before your massage therapy session is scheduled

Eating before a massage session is not recommended. It's not easy for the body to relax when it is busy digesting a meal. Also, eating a meal right before lying down can lead to indigestion in many patients.

It's best to schedule meals for at least a few hours before a massage session.

Being shy about communicating with the massage therapist

Communication is key when it comes to success in massage therapy. You need to express your experiences and feelings to the massage therapist so that he or she knows how to best accommodate you.

Before your session starts, you need to provide information on the particular condition—if any—your session is focused on addressing. You also should let the massage therapist know if you have any allergies because massage therapists sometimes use lotions or oils to reduce friction during a massage session.

Thinking you need to take off all of your clothing

You don't have to remove all your clothing during a massage therapy session for massage to be effective. You shouldn't remove clothing if you don't feel comfortable with it. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and comfortable during your session.

Assuming only one session will instantly solve all of your physical issues

Like any type of therapy, massage therapy is most effective over the long term. Thinking a single session will cure you of all your ailments will set you up for disappointment.

Not arriving well ahead of time

You'll be off to a bad start if you feel rushed and stressed at the beginning of your massage therapy session. For this reason, it's important that you arrive ahead of time and avoid showing up at the last minute.

Failing to relax your mind as well as your body

Your own state of mind is an important determining factor regarding the success of a massage therapy session. If your mind is running and you're focusing on your to-do list rather than relaxing, your massage therapy session isn't going to be as successful as it should be. You need to do your part to relax your mind by controlling your thought processes and avoiding stressful or anxiety-inducing thoughts during your session.
